BEST WESTERN:
SHAPING A NATION'S MYTHOS THROUGH FILM

3 – 10 June

Cultures tell themselves who they are through their stories. For Americans the near simultaneous birth of cinema and ‘closing’ of the West meant they were able to look back on a defining period of their history with the very places and people intact. The frontier settings became a global genre, open to regular reinvention.

Rio Bravo (PG)

Dir: Howard Hawks
US 1959 141mins 4K
In this classical western battling wits, courage and character, Rio Bravo’s town Sherriff John T. Chance must protect his keep, convicted gunslinger and murderer Joe Burdette, from his brother Nathan Burdette, who wants nothing more than to see Chance dead. Star Wayne and director Hawks conceived this positivist view of frontier America in direct response to High Noon’s pacifistic revisionist approach to the genre. Cited by John Carpenter as a major influence. Stars John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Angie Dickinson.

ONce upon a time in the west (M)

Dir: Sergio Leone
Italy/US 1968 165mins Brand new 35mm print
A mysterious stranger who plays a haunting tune on his harmonica forms a fractious alliance with a grizzled desperado to protect the land of a beautiful widow from a cold hearted assassin working for the railroad in this sweeping, epic Spaghetti Western. Operatic in every way from the slow, deliberate movements of the protagonists to the pulsating score by Ennio Morricone, Leone manages to top the glorious excess of The Good the Bad and the Ugly in the best possible way. Stars Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Claudia Cardinale.
