TWO OF A KIND:
CHEMISTRY ON A SCREEN

19 – 26 April

There are special moments in films where two actors seem so perfect together it’s hard to imagine them ever being apart. Sometimes their professional talents complement each others, other times they’re even closer off screen than on, and sometimes they’re just the right actors for the right roles and all the stars have aligned.

Dir: Michael Gordon
US 1959 105mins 35mm
Rock Hudson and Doris Day only made three films together but their on-screen pairing embodied the perfect post-war Hollywood couple. Self-reliant Jan Morrow and Broadway composer playboy Brad Allen bicker over their building’s shared telephone line, but once Brad lays eyes on his adversary he decides that must have her and creates a new persona with which to woo her. The path of true love may not run smoothly, and Hudson’s comic duplicity has tragic overtones, but it’s a very funny ride.

Adam's Rib (pG)

Dir: George Cukor
US 1949 97mins 16mm
When two married lawyers take opposing sides in a case, the result is a confused jury and an amused audience. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn may have kept their real life relationship under wraps but as Adam and Amanda Bonner there are plenty of sparks on screen. Lengthy takes capture hilarious verbal gymnastics as each strives for legal and personal dominance, taking the battle of the sexes further than it had ever gone before. This is perhaps the definitive vehicle for the famed dance duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Jerry Travers, an American dancer in London, becomes instantly smitten with Dale Tremont and gives chase as only he can. Dale spends most of the movie thinking Jerry is a friend’s husband and the stage is set for classic screwball shenanigans and unforgettable musical numbers by the golden couple of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
