GRAND DAMES OF THE PRE-CODE ERA

25 May – 1 June

Prior to the introduction of the Hayes Code censorship guidelines, a libertine spirit ruled Hollywood. With no shortage of roles for strong, assertive women, actresses such as Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow and Mae West became major movie stars. Risqué sexual innuendo, drug use and profane language was rife, almost no subject was taboo. Introduced in 1930 the code was generally ignored, only when it was backed up with threats of boycotts in 1934 did the industry begin to adhere. This selection of films captures the transitional period as the code was implemented.

OUR GANGS FOLLIES OF 1938

Dir: Mervyn LeRoy US 1933 96mins 35mm
The third adaptation of the hit Broadway play The Gold Diggers, this brilliant musical made at the height of the Great Depression maintains a strong social conscience. The familiar plot of secretive pasts and mistaken identity, as four young showgirls are accused of shameless gold digging when they attempt to stage a show, is interspersed with spectacular Busby Berkeley musical numbers including the celebrated We're in The Money. Stars Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell and Ginger Rogers.

Preceded by comedy short Our Gang Follies of 1938.

SHE DONE HIM WRONG (18+)

Bawdy saloon singer Lady Lou maintains quite a few gentlemen friends, much to the fury of a vicious former boyfriend who has recently escaped from prison. Young Captain Cummings, director of the city mission, comes to the rescue, but he is not all he seems either. Mae West lures Cary Grant with her infamous, and widely misquoted, indecent proposal in this knockabout parody of the Gay Nineties …that’s 1890s. Print courtesy of the National Film & Sound Archive.

BELLE OF THE NINETIES (18+)

Dir. Lowell Sherman US 1934 73mins 16mm
The freewheeling spirit of the Gay Nineties rolls on as Ruby Carter goes onstage to sing and then backstage to do something else entirely with pugilist Tiger Kid. Skipping town to New Orleans, Carter is given top billing by saloon owner Ace Lamont. But when Tiger arrives for a prize fight, dastardly plots and cunning schemes abound in this fast paced musical comedy. Featuring Duke Ellington and his Orchestra and several stunning musical numbers. Print courtesy of the National Film & Sound Archive.

QUEEN CHRISTINA (PG)

Dir: Rouben Mamoulian US 1933 99mins 35mm
Devoted to her country, Queen Christina of Sweden abandons thoughts of romance. But when she rides away one night while disguised as a man to escape the restrictions of her royal life, she meets and falls in love with a Spanish emissary while snowbound at an inn. But the union of Protestant and Catholic could never be while they are at war and even Christina’s abdication of the throne cannot guarantee a happy ending in this haunting melodrama. Stars Greta Garbo and John Gilbert.
