Ken Russell:
The Savage messiah

14 – 21 June

Ken Russell (b.1927), remains one of the most daring, original and contentious figures in British cinema. Moving from photography through groundbreaking television work, Russell attacked film with all the relish his febrile imagination could muster. Bold images, taboo-shattering moments and surreal humour as only he could envision.

THE BOY FRIEND || BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN || WOMEN IN LOVE

7:30pm Monday 14 June

The Boy Friend (G)

Dir: Ken Russell
UK/US 1971 135mins 35mm
Freely adapting Sandy Wilson’s hugely popular musical into a larger framework, the original stage show’s tale of young love, mistaken identity and happy endings becomes a reflection on performance and celebrity as a recital is visited on the night that the leading lady has been replaced by her shy understudy. Filled with references to classic Busby Berkeley and MGM musical sequences, this is a rare opportunity to see one of Russell’s more obscure films. Stars Twiggy and Glenda Jackson.

7:30pm Thursday 17 June

Billion dollar brain (PG)

Dir: Ken Russell
UK 1967 111mins 35mm
Following the success of The Ipcress File, Harry Palmer returns for the third instalment in a classic Cold War saga of spies, a killer virus and a shadowy anti-Soviet organisation that controls the groovy titular supercomputer. Russell delivers a more restrained effort than usual adapting Len Deighton’s pot-boiler novel in only his second directorial effort but still adds his own unique flair with flourishes of classical music and homage to Sergei Eisenstien. Stars Michael Caine, Karl Malden and Ed Begley.

7:30pm Monday 17 June

Women In love (m)

Dir: Ken Russell
UK 1969 131mins 35mm
This compelling rendition of D.H. Lawrence’s literary masterpiece explores the complexities of sexuality and romantic love. Growing up in the sheltered society of 1920s England, sisters Gudrun and Ursula know little about the ways of love. When they pursue thrilling, torrid affairs with a notorious playboy and a brooding philanderer what they discover about their lovers, and themselves, becomes all-consuming and more volatile than they ever dared imagine. Stars Oliver Reed, Alan Bates and Glenda Jackson.
