Kubrick:
calculated humanity

22 – 29 July

Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) made only thirteen meticulous feature films in his life. A notorious perfectionist, his methodical directing style resulted in some of the most striking visuals ever to grace the screen. Yet even as his film’s pace slowed and became more intellectualised, he never lost the emotional and human core of his storytelling.

Dir: Stanley Kubrick

US Marine Private Joker observes the dehumanising effects of military life as both a fresh marine recruit and a cynical journalist posted in Da Nang during the Vietnam War. Berated by his drill sergeant and subject to psychological, emotional and physical brutality, Joker’s morality and pragmatic outlook is tarnished by the horrors experienced by those in his regiment. Stunning performances by Matthew Modine, Vincent D’Onofrio and R. Lee Ermey make this essential viewing.

2001: a space odyssey (G)

Dir: Stanley Kubrick
UK/US 1968 141mins 35mm
Benefiting from a moment of evolutionary intervention and the most significant jump-cut in cinema history, the human species discovers an artefact buried on the surface of the moon which directs them towards Jupiter. Astronauts Dr. Bowman and Dr. Poole are sent on a mission with intelligent computer system HAL 9000 to investigate. In the spectacular final reel, humanity’s insignificance and need to outgrow its earthly limitations are illustrated wordlessly and mesmerically. Marrying high art with science fiction, Kubrick’s cinematic opus is unmissable on the big screen.
