ROCK ON REELS: MUSICIANS MEET THE MOVIES

Rock stars and the camera have a natural affinity. Australian rock stars and filmmakers are no less entwined and the near-parallel ascendency of Australian New Wave film and the pub rock scene led to inevitable collaboration in the 1980s. From brightly coloured pop comedy, to drug-addled romantic tragedy and the chaos of the Melbourne post-punk scene, it’s all here. It’s Countdown: The Movie!

This funny, tragic and sometimes uplifting portrait of a subculture at the end of an era, centres on the relationship between one of the band members and a quiet young girl who drifts into the scene. This newly created digital restoration premiered at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival. Stars Chris Haywood and Michael Hutchence from INXS.
