The Australian New Wave may be remembered for its glorious exploitation films, but there were some very serious and still provocative entries. Movies which explore something disturbing gnawing away at our cultural consciousness, movies which take an unflinching look into the abyss, and wait until it blinks.

SAVAGES CROSSING

WAKE IN FRIGHT (MA15+)

Dir: Ted Kotcheff
Australia/US 1970 114mins 35mm
Dapper English schoolmaster John Grant stops in the dustbowl town of Bundanyabba while holidaying in Australia. A fateful night at a pub with local cop Jock Crawford leaves Grant penniless and, as one day turns into five, his chances of escaping ‘the Yabba’ diminish. From draining copious pints, to excessive gambling, sordid sexual acts and violence, the pleasant English Jekyll becomes a brutish Australian Hyde. The restored print presents a nightmarish and confronting view of Australia. Stars Gary Bond, Chips Rafferty, Jack Thompson and Donald Pleasance.

Pure shit (R18+)

Dir: Bert Deling
Australia 1975 83mins 35mm
Set over a weekend in Melbourne, four young heroin addicts roam the inner city streets in search of a daily fix of good quality ‘pure shit’, their hedonistic ventures complicated with dire consequences. Condemned by the mainstream this lost film has found its way back into the national consciousness over 30 years later. Raw, unapologetic and pitch black, it remains both a cult hit and a unique exposé of the dark heroin subculture that captures the changing socio-political climate of the day. Print courtesy of the National Film & Sound Archive and Bert Deling.

savages crossing (ma15+)

Dir: Kevin Dobson
Australia 2009 83mins 4k
As the water level rises, so does the tension in this fast-paced, highly charged psychological thriller. Heavy rains and rising flood waters appear to be the danger as a group of strangers are forced to take shelter in a remote roadhouse. However things are not what they seem in Savages Crossing...the danger that lurks within the roadhouse is far greater. John Jarratt, Criag McLachlan, Sacha Horler and Chris Haywood.
