Can I purchase a single ticket to an Adelaide Cinémathèque screening?

Adelaide Cinémathèque is a membership based film society. As such, you cannot purchase single tickets to screenings in the program. Instead you are required to join as a member, which you can do on the spot prior to any Cinémathèque session.

Why do I need to become a member?

It is necessary for Adelaide Cinémathèque to be structured as a membership based film society for several reasons. Firstly, it is a not-for-profit venture, we rely on the generous assistance of the Australian Film Commission to be able to present this program, which is provided on the understanding that we do not run a commercial operation. Secondly, access to many of the films we show are restricted to film societies and educational institutions only. Thirdly, we need your continued support and involvement to be able to continue screening rare and quality cinema. Without memberships, there would be no Adelaide Cinémathèque.

Why do I need to pay $35 to see a film at Adelaide Cinémathèque?

If you purchase a Mini Membership, the most you need to pay is $35 to see four films at Adelaide Cinémathèque, that works out to a cost of $8.75 per session, even cheaper if you carry a concession card. The savings are even greater when you purchase a Midi Membership, that works out to a cost of $4.38 per session. The best value of all is an Annual Membership, if you saw every film in Adelaide Cinémathèque 2009, it would cost you approximately just over $1 per session. We reckon it’s the best deal in Adelaide, of course the full value that you get from your Cinémathèque membership depends on you.

Why do I need to fill in a membership form with my contact details?

It is a requirement of your membership registration that we keep a record of your details. This also allows us to send the latest Cinémathèque calendar to you directly and contact you with the latest updates and special offers for members. We also require that you date and sign your membership application form to indicate that you abide by the conditions of membership. If you don’t complete the application in full, we cannot admit you as a member.

My friend wants to come along to a screening. Can we both use the same membership pass?

Every person attending Adelaide Cinémathèque needs to purchase their own membership pass. More than one person will not be admitted on the same membership pass. If you are a regular at Cinematheque, we suggest you purchase a second Mini Membership that you can loan to a friend. For some sessions we may invite Cinémathèque members to bring along a guest for free, keep an eye out for special announcements.

Can I see everything at the Mercury Cinema with my Adelaide Cinémathèque membership?

Your Cinémathèque membership grants you entry to any screenings listed in the two Adelaide Cinémathèque calendars published each year. The films in these calendars screen every Monday and Thursday night. While your Cinémathèque membership does not grant you entry to other screenings at the Mercury Cinema, Annual Membership card holders are able to purchase tickets at the concession rate.

I have lost my Adelaide Cinémathèque membership card. Can I get it replaced?

Unfortunately we cannot replace lost Mini or Midi membership cards, so keep them in a safe place. If you have an Annual membership, we are able to issue you with a new membership card within a few days for a $5.00 fee.

I have an unused session left on my 2009 Mini or Midi membership. Can I use it in 2010?

All Cinémathèque memberships are only valid for the year in which they are purchased. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to use up all the sessions in your Mini & Midi memberships, we advise you pick out your favourite films in the calendar and put them in your diary.

I really want to see (insert favourite movie). Can you include it in the Adelaide Cinémathèque 2010 program?

We always want to hear what you would like to see screening at Adelaide Cinémathèque and, depending on expense and availability, will do our best to include them in the program. In 2010 there will be select opportunities for Cinémathèque members to enjoy a free drink and have a chat with the Exhibition Manager about the Adelaide Cinémathèque program. This could be your chance to program films in Adelaide Cinémathèque yourself.

Why are some films unclassified?

Some touring and older film titles have not been classified by the Office of Film & Literature Classification. Adelaide Cinémathèque will seek an exemption from classification in SA which allows us to include such films in film societies and festivals. As a general rule these unclassified films will be 18+, meaning that anyone under the age of eighteen will not be permitted to see the film. This is a condition of classification exemption and there will be no exceptions, regardless of the film’s actual content.

Adelaide Cinémathèque membership based film society, no single session tickets are sold. Memberships can be purchased at the box office prior to any screening. Members then gain admission to the number of Cinémathèque session specified on their pass for no additional charge. Admission 18+ except where classification is otherwise indicated.

The Adelaide Cinémathèque reserves the right to alter membership rates and may apply additional charges for special events. Memberships expire at the end of 2008.

Adelaide Cinémathèque is presented by the Australian Film Commission and the Media Resource Centre. Curated for the Adelaide Cinémathèque by Toby Bramwell, with the assistance of the National Melbourne Cinémathèque and MRC Members Exhibition Group.
