GUS VAN SANT: POETIC DYSFUNCTION

4 August – 11 August

Film director, author, photographer and musician, Gus Van Sant (b. 1952) possesses an enormous depth to his artistic vocabulary. Early in his career he became fascinated by the marginalised in society, populating his films with junkies, hustlers, drifters, psychopaths and troubled geniuses. Flirting with the mainstream for several years, Van Sant has recently returned to an art-house aesthetic, concentrating on a slower, more meditative style that seeks to delve deeper into the human soul.

A meditation on the inner turmoil that engulfs a brilliant, but troubled musician in the final hours of his life. Blake, who bears more than a passing resemblance to Kurt Cobain, is an introspective artist buckling under the weight of fame, professional obligations and a mounting feeling of isolation. He wanders through his secluded home, a fugitive from his own life, while layers of image and sound articulate his emotional landscape. Stars Michael Pitt, Lukas Haas, Asia Argento and Kim Gordon.
