monte HEllman & Warren Oates:
American Drifters

21 April – 24 April 2008

Working with low budgets and minimal crew, Monte Hellman (b.1932) managed to achieve a small degree of creative freedom in his career, documentary elements and fluid camerawork lending an understated authenticity to his films. Warren Oates (1928-1982) appeared in several of Hellman’s pictures, his performances characterised by a brutish inarticulation, complemented with a look or a furrowed brow that seemed to say so much more. While neither achieved mainstream success, both attained a deserved and loyal cult following in later years.

Two-Lane Blacktop || Cockfighter

7:30pm Monday 21 April

TWO-LANE BLACKTOP (M)

Dir: Monte Hellman US  1971  103mins  16mm
Two drag-racing drifters in a customized ‘55 Chevy, race the driver of a new Pontiac GTO along Route 66, wagering each others pink slips and vying for the affection of a young hitchhiker. This elliptical, existential road movie rejects narrative tension for complex characterisation and atmosphere. Stars James Taylor, Dennis Wilson, Harry Dean Stanton, Laurie Bird & Warren Oates.

Listed in 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.

7:30pm Thursday 24 April

COCKFIGHTER (18+)

Dir: Monte Hellman US  1974  85mins  16mm
Taking a vow of silence, Frank Mansfield struggles to reach the top of the brutal Cockfighting circuit in Georgia. The controversial subject matter is redeemed through it’s sophisticated exploration of masculine repression and Warren Oates’ compelling, wordless performance. Stars Harry Dean Stanton, Laurie Bird & Warren Oates.
