shohei imamura:
reflections of the rising sun

2 June - 12 June 2008

One of the most idiosyncratic of filmmakers, Shohei Imamura (1926-2006) preferred to focus on what he saw as peculiarly Japanese elements of society in his films. Sometimes expressing surprise that his films were appreciated overseas, Imamura once stated "I've always wanted to ask questions about the Japanese, because it's the only people I'm qualified to describe”. The films selected for this season were to establish his reputation as a leading figure in the Japanese New Wave and are characterised by their strong willed heroines and dark humour.

HOGS AND WARSHIPS || THE INSECT WOMAN
UNHOLY DESIRE || THE PORNOGRAPHER

7:30pm Monday 2 June

hogs and warships (18+)

Dir: Shohei Imamura Japan  1961  108mins  16mm
This protest against Japan’s post-war capitulation to American cultural occupation is set amid the criminal world surrounding a US naval base. The Yakuza raise hogs fed on garbage from the base, to supply pork to the navy. Haruko is a young woman determined to escape her fate as a prostitute while her boyfriend Kinta, lacking the same survival instinct, becomes embroiled in a gangland feud.

7:30pm Thursday 5 June

the insect woman (18+)

Dir: Shohei Imamura  Japan  1963  123mins  16mm
Set against the socio-political currents of the time,   the life of Tome is chronicled from country innocent,  to war-time union activist, to maid for a post-war mystical religion, to prostitute and ultimately madam. Her progression is punctuated by entries from her diary, revealing her innermost thoughts, her strengths and frailties.

7:30pm Monday 9 June

UNHOLY DESIRE (18+)

Dir: Shohei Imamura  Japan  1964  150mins  16mm
Interweaving the past and present, a young woman rebels against her subservience to the patriarchal   order after she is raped by an intruder. Brought up in   a rigid family system, Sadako rejects the traditional Japanese code that calls for a wife to commit suicide after rape. But her inner strength is tested when the offender returns.

7:30pm Thursday 12 June

the pornographer (18+)

Dir: Shohei Imamura  Japan  1966  128mins  16mm
A pornographic filmmaker is both obsessed and disgusted with the lechery of his customers. Yearning  to escape from his marginal existence and struggling  to meet the needs of his ailing wife, mistress and two stepchildren, he retires to a houseboat to construct   the perfect facsimile of a woman. A darkly satirical view of the Japanese psyche during its post-war economic revival.
