LARRY COHEN: CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE
21 August
Larry Cohen (b. 1938) is a film producer, director, and screenwriter best known as one of the key filmmakers in the blaxploitation boom of the seventies and a series of low-budget but inventive horror films and thrillers that remained popular well into the eighties. While Cohen never quite escaped his genre origins, his idiosyncratic body of work remains highly influential and he remains in demand as a writer to this day.

IT’S ALIVE (R18+)
Dir: Larry Cohen
US 1973 90mins 16mm
Frank and Sharon give birth to a monstrous baby, who goes on a murderous rampage through Los Angeles. Conflicted by an instinctive love for his child and the gravity of its crimes, Frank decides that he is the person to hunt it down. Deftly shifting the audience’s sympathies, Cohen takes an outrageous concept and gives it a surprising depth, helped in part by a earnest performance by John Ryan as the tormented father. Features a stirring Bernard Herrman score and special effects from the legendary Rick Baker.
