REVELATIONS: THE BOX-OFFICE PROPHETS

25 August – 1 September

Charlatans or the second coming? Each prophet has his own seductive angle on salvation, but whether they speak a greater truth or not there is no denying that it’s the delivery of their message that is most entertaining. Take a look at the darker half of the other side.

GOD TOLD ME TO || WISE BLOOD || MARJOE

7:30pm Monday 25 August

GOD TOLD ME TO (MA15+)

Dir: Larry Cohen
US 1976 90mins 16mm
New York cop Peter Nicholas investigates a series of apparently random murders. The only common link is that each killer claims a divine directive as a reason for the crime. Indeed there is a greater power at hand as Nicholas closes in on a messianic cult leader who might just be what he says he is. A genuine original, Cohen crams this mix of crime thriller, SF and horror with more ideas than most directors have in a lifetime. Features celebrated comedian Andy Kaufman in his feature film debut.

7:30pm Thursday 28 August

WISE BLOOD (18+)

Dir: John Huston
US 1979 106mins 16mm
In this Southern gothic morality tale based on the Flannery O’Connor novel, Hazel Motes takes up preaching in a doomed rebellion against the evangelism and repression of his upbringing. Trying to play the game by his own rules, Motes sets up a self-proclaimed “Church without Christ”, only to have his message ignored and later exploited for money. His refusal to conform sets about his own downfall, paralleling the martyrdom of Christ. Stars Brad Dourif, John Huston, Ned Beatty and Harry Dean Stanton.

7:30pm Monday 1 September

MARJOE (18+)

Dir: Sarah Kernochan & Howard Smith
US 1972 88mins
Precocious child preacher Marjoe Gortner became the world’s youngest ordained minister at the age of four. Years later as an adult he embarks on a "farewell to the faith tour" along the church tent Revivalist circuit, this time with a camera crew in tow.  Fearlessly exposing himself as a fraud, the charismatic Gortner sets about revealing the business secrets of  evangelical religion with extraordinary honesty and humour. Winner Oscar Best Feature Documentary 1973
