GOD TOLD ME TO (MA15+)
Dir: Larry Cohen
US 1976 90mins 16mm
New York cop Peter Nicholas investigates a series of apparently random murders. The only common link is that each killer claims a divine directive as a reason for the crime. Indeed there is a greater power at hand as Nicholas closes in on a messianic cult leader who might just be what he says he is. A genuine original, Cohen crams this mix of crime thriller, SF and horror with more ideas than most directors have in a lifetime. Features celebrated comedian Andy Kaufman in his feature film debut.

In this Southern gothic morality tale based on the Flannery O’Connor novel, Hazel Motes takes up preaching in a doomed rebellion against the evangelism and repression of his upbringing. His refusal to conform sets about his own downfall, paralleling the martyrdom of Christ. Stars Brad Dourif, John Huston, Ned Beatty and Harry Dean Stanton.
