john sayles: godfather of independent cinema

16 June - 30 June 2008

John Sayles (b.1950) started in the business by writing snappy screenplays for genre pictures, such as Piranha, Alligator & The Howling, before moving on to more personal subject matter with his directorial debut, Return of the Secaucus 7. Sayles remains one of the few directors to successfully eschew the studio system, lending a genuinely independent voice to American screen culture. Concentrating on themes of community and familial ties, Sayles is a true auteur, writing, directing and editing almost all of his films.
