VAL LEWTON & JACQUES TOURNEUR: RADIO PICTURES

6 November – 13 November

In the space of a single year, producer Val Lewton (1904-1951) and director Jacques Tourneur (1904-1977) delivered three low budget B pictures for RKO. They were given three provisos by the studio, the films had to be made for less than $150,000 each, run under 75 minutes and the titles were to be provided to them. Exceeding all expectations, the resultant films were box-office hits and all classics in their own right. Often referred to as horror, they were as much film noir filled with ominous suggestion and themes of existential ambivalence.

CAT PEOPLE || I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE || THE LEOPARD MAN

7:30pm Thursday 6 November

CAT PEOPLE (M)

Dir: Jacques Tourneur
US 1943 73mins 16mm
A recently married fashion designer becomes obsessed with the fear that an ancient curse will transform her into a cat if she consummates the union. Notable for its ambiguity and restraint, a mark of Lewton's productions, the skilful use of lighting and sound effects help to create a creeping sense of dread and inevitable doom.

Preceded by a serial episode of Zorro’s Fighting Legion (1939)

Feature listed in 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

7:30pm Monday 10 November

I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (PG)

Dir: Jacques Tourneur
US 1943 69mins 16mm
In this haunting reinterpretation of Jane Eyre, a young woman journeys to the West Indies to nurse a sick woman to health where she encounters the mysteries of voodoo and the island’s dark history. Blurring the distinction between good and evil, this psychological horror is surprisingly sensitive in its depiction of island customs.

Preceded by a serial episode of Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941)

Feature listed in 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

7:30pm Thursday 13 November

THE LEOPARD MAN (PG)

Dir: Jacques Tourneur
US 1943 66mins 16mm
A leopard hired as a publicity stunt for a night-club performer escapes to terrorise a small New Mexico town. As residents are being found mauled to death, suspicion grows that something more sinister is responsible for the killings. This disturbing tale is notable for the expressive use of off-screen space and pools of light in the darkness.

Preceded by a serial episode of The Miracle Rider (1935)
